Typically, females have been stereotyped as creative individuals who lack logical or analytical thinking. This coupled with social norms and cultural traditions that put women students on back foot has further alienated them from getting their due when it comes to technical education in India. This clearly explains why there are so few female students in engineering colleges. Also, the gender ratio in all engineering colleges is skewed especially for core engineering branches such as mechanical, civil or chemical branches etc.

But with the changing dynamics of society, this trend is changing. Women are getting more and more independent and making their name in careers which were restricted to men only. The fighting spirit with which female students have broken the traditional norms have enabled them to reach new heights when it comes to engineering education. Hence, having more capable females in top-notch institutions can improve the health of India's engineering sector and the landscape of future innovation. But, there still exists a male-centric bias in the engineering colleges in India and the while things are changing they are not changing at the required pace.

In such times, a few dedicated engineering colleges that offer women-centric engineering programmes are the need of time. Today, a lot of engineering colleges are also working towards providing courses to women in order to help female students get an equal footing when it comes to engineering education.
