No matter how much you have scored or where you are from, picking the best engineering college from a plethora of options is indeed a task for anyone. With the number of engineering colleges being added every year, choosing the best college which matches with your expectations has become a grave challenge. We can understand your confusion to make a choice and we are here to help you in this regards.

With the announcement of the result, start preparing yourself for the most important aspect which is Counselling. It will let you decide the college and the branch which you are going to peruse for the next four years.

Before making a choice, take out a piece of paper and start jotting down your priorities. The list should include career opportunities in all branches, institute’s fees, quality of faculty vs guest lecturers, last year’s cut offs, placement record, their emphasis on extracurricular activities, location and curriculum, etc.
Below are some of the detailed parameters which should help you decide the college which fits best with your requirement:

1. Infrastructure: This is one of the most critical factors while choosing a college of your dreams. It does not imply that you should pick a good looking building which has a marvellous architecture but it should suffice the requirement and has a basic setup. It should have a basic classroom, an administrative wing, workshop, computer labs and other laboratories etc. Trust me, in the coming years, you are going to spend every waking hour in all these places, so choose wisely!.

2. Facilities: The college should be equipped with the library, hostels, seminar halls, gym, cafeteria and a high bandwidth internet connection. Such facilities will prove to be a boon for your engineering studies. While Library and internet connection will be your go to guys to find the latest study materials and keep track of latest research facilities in your engineering domain; hotels, gym, cafeteria and other facilities will make your life easier while you are not busy peeping down a big reference book.

3. Placements: Look at the past placements offers and their salary package and analyse their median salary offer. Though every college boasts about their students with the highest package in their brochure but you should also research well about their placement records. The placement statistics will help you determine how effective the engineering programme is and what kind of job you can expect after walking out as an engineering from this particular institute.

4. Faculty: Spend some time reading about their faculty and their academic qualifications. How many faculty members hold PhDs and from where did they do their M.Tech? Also, make a note of the number of in-house faculty members and the quality of their guest faculty. Faculty to student ratio is very important.

5. Location: Is your institute located near any industrial hub or is it located in the heart of the city? You should be comfortable with the area of location since this will affect your education.

6. Extra- Curricular activities: The college should also provide a platform to develop your all round personality. Make a note of their extra-curricular activities as students club, annual function, sports meet, seminars and workshops, industrial training and other social activities, etc.

7. Tie-ups: Checkout their organizational tie-ups with industry and it will itself speaks about its quality establishment.

8. Accreditation: Is the institute accredited by NAAC, NBA or AICTE? With this, you will be able to figure out your academic process, grading pattern, exams, and admissions, etc.

9. Curriculum: Analyze the curriculum of the college carefully. If it is an accredited university then it has to follow the university norms or else if it is deemed university, then it has the flexibility of deciding its own curriculum. Make a note of how many courses do they teach, their number of electives and other skill driven courses to train you for a better tomorrow.

10.  Research: Better the faculty, better would be the research output. Read their faculty’s publications and journals and also look for their involvement in other research projects with various departments of science and technology, etc.

I understand that it is indeed a time-consuming process to analyse each and every factor mentioned above. Try and visit the college website and read all the information mentioned in it. If the college is in your city then pay a visit and interact with current students or seniors to get consultation on the same. Checkout it’s ranking among other colleges. A lot of people run behind brand names and get attracted with their dreamy advertisements and they, eventually fail to recognize a good college. Remember, it is all about the quality of education provided by them and how well you are able to articulate it into your career goals.  Good luck!
